The Sentimental Joy of Collecting Ornaments from Travels
Collecting ornaments from travels is more than just acquiring souvenirs—it’s a heartfelt way to encapsulate memories, preserve experiences, and bring a piece of the world back home. These tiny treasures carry immense sentimental value and serve as tangible reminders of the adventures embarked upon in distant lands.
Memories in Material Form
Each ornament collected during travels represents a moment frozen in time—a snapshot of the sights, sounds, and emotions experienced during that particular journey. Whether it’s a miniature Eiffel Tower from Paris, a handcrafted ornament from a local Navajo artisan in the USA, or a fortune cookie from the time we were allowed to try and make these ourselves, these items encapsulate the essence of the places visited.

Stories and Connections
Every ornament tells a story. It may narrate the bustling markets where it was purchased, the warmth of the locals encountered, or the awe-inspiring landscapes witnessed. Sharing these stories with loved ones when decorating the tree fosters connections, sparking conversations about the adventures, cultures, and experiences that have shaped one’s travels.
Whenever someone visits our home around Christmas time, we always get questions about the decorations in our tree. A great way to start a conversation about travel.
A Personalized Keepsake
Unlike generic souvenirs, ornaments collected from travels are deeply personal. They aren’t just decorative items but hold emotional significance, evoking cherished memories whenever they catch the eye. They become a personalized keepsake, holding a special place in the heart and home.
Sometimes we choose an ornament that shows a significant landmark we visited. But sometimes the ornament is connect to that trip and something we experienced. Like the lemon from Tuscany. We noticed lemons were so connected with this region, that we just had to buy a lemon ornament.
The same goes for the “Le Petit Prince (little Prince)” ornament we bought in Paris. We love that iconic French story so much, that when we saw the Christmas Ornament, we just had to buy it.

“It is so much fun to decorate our Christmas Tree every year. All the memories of our trips, short and long, come flooding back to us. And it is awesome to hang the new additions from that year for the first time.”

Preserving Traditions and Cultures
Ornaments often reflect the unique traditions, artistry, and cultural heritage of a place. They might showcase local craftsmanship, traditional motifs, or materials indigenous to the region. By collecting these ornaments, one pays homage to the diverse cultures encountered and preserves a slice of the world’s cultural tapestry.

Christmas Tradition from Denmark
This is a perfect example of having a bit of a foreign tradition in our tree. We bought this ornament in Denmark. We saw these everywhere, so we figured it must be something traditional.
We asked around and the lady from the shop told us these cone-shaped decorations would hang in the tree. They would be filled with Christmas Cookies and other candy.
We loved hearing that story. This is what gives the ornament another meaning to us.

Holiday Traditions and Nostalgia
Bringing out these travel ornaments during the holiday season adds a touch of nostalgia and warmth to the festivities. As each ornament is carefully hung on the tree, it transports one back to the moments when it was acquired, evoking a sense of joy and nostalgia that embodies the true spirit of the season.
In essence, collecting ornaments from travels transcends mere decoration; it’s a way to weave the tapestry of one’s adventures into the fabric of home. These ornaments not only adorn a tree but also tell the beautifully woven story of a life well-traveled—one ornament at a time.
