You will Love this Recipe for the Best Slovak Dessert – Potato Dumplings with Poppy Seeds
I promise you, the Slovak Dessert in this recipe will be one of the best desserts you’ve ever had. Also one of the easiest desserts to make at home. Haluski means potato dumplings. In Slovakia they can either be prepared in a savory or sweet way. This version of Haluski is made with potato dumplings, sugar and cinnamon and topped off with Poppy Seeds. The perfect dessert. Let’s dig in!
Last summer we spend a day exploring Bratislava. We found this simple and cute restaurant that served traditional Slovak Food. We noticed Poppy Seeds are used a lot in the Slovak Cuisine. Not only on the menu of the restaurant but also in bakeries in town. The dessert we found on the menu was so simple but so tasty it just blew our minds. And we are sure you will love this as well.
We also made a video on our day of exploring Bratislava and all the food we tasted.
We’ll first dive into the history of Haluski and then we will share our recipe. We assure you, it is so simple and it takes less then 10 minutes before you can dig in.

What is the History of the Slovak Dessert Haluski?
Haluski potato dumplings have a long history in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in countries such as Slovakia, Poland, and Ukraine.
Potatoes were introduced to Europe in the late 16th century, but it wasn’t until the 18th century that they became a popular staple food in Central and Eastern Europe. Prior to that, grains such as wheat and rye were the primary sources of starch for most people.
Potato dumplings, or Haluski, were likely developed as a way to make use of this new food source. The exact origins of the dish are not clear, but it is believed to have originated in the mountainous regions of Slovakia and Poland, where potatoes were particularly well-suited to the cool climate and rocky soil.
Over time, Haluski became a popular and beloved dish throughout Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in rural areas where potatoes were an easy crop. It was often served as a main course or side dish, and was particularly popular during the winter months when fresh vegetables were scarce.
Today, haluski potato dumplings remain a beloved and iconic dish in many parts of Europe, particularly in Slovakia, Poland, and Ukraine. They are often served with a variety of toppings, including butter, cheese, onions, and of course, poppy seeds, which are a popular ingredient in many Eastern European desserts.

How we make our own version of the Slovak Dessert with potato dumplings?
For our homemade version of the Haluski dessert we did not make our own potato dumplings. It is not needed since you can get Italian Gnocchi at every supermarket. (in Germany you can also use Schupfnudeln)
We can hear you think: “Wait, are you using Gnocchi for a dessert?” Yes, that’s right. Italian Gnocchi is a potato dumpling and even though it is mostly the ingredient for savory main courses, you’ll be surprised at this way of using it.

How to make the Slovak Dessert yourself?
Let’s get started. Here is a list of the ingredients you will need for this amazing dish that will blow your mind.
- 1 package of Gnocchi
- butter
- cinnamon powder
- brown sugar
- powdered sugar
- poppy seeds
- optional: vanilla ice cream (or my favorite: cinnamon ice cream)
How to prepare the sweet Haluski?
Heat a pan on the stove. Add a generous bit of butter, wait till golden. Add the Gnocchi in the pan and cook the Gnocchi in the butter for about 5 minutes. When the Gnocchi starts to get brown it is time to add a generous amount of brown sugar and cinnamon powder. Keep stirring and let the sugar caramalize the Gnocchi. This will only need 2 to 3 minutes.
Once the Gnocchi is ready, put it on a plate and top it off with a bit of powdered sugar and a generous amount of poppy seeds. If you like you can add some ice cream, but that is optional. Normally we make it without the ice cream, but for our Christmas Dinner we decided to add some.
You might have noticed we used the word “generous” a lot. That’s because you definitely want to hit all the flavors. It is not an exact science, so have fun and experiment a bit yourself and see how generous you want to be with all the ingredients.

Thank you for sharing this delightful Slovak dessert recipe! It sounds intriguing and quite straightforward to prepare. Could you suggest any other toppings that pair well with the poppy seed and cinnamon combination? Also, given how much traditional food can enrich a trip, do you think trying local foods like these in Slovakia is worth it, especially considering travel prices these days? Thanks for the inspiration!
Hey thanks for visiting our blog. I think the poppy seed and cinnamon combination is simply amazing. Paired with some powdered sugar. Maybe you could add a bit of honey. Or crushed walnuts. But we would suggest staying in the “warm” flavors and not go for a citrus thing.
When we travel we always try to find some local and traditional food. It shows so much about the culture and it inspires our cooking back at home. Like this dish, we have made it quite a lot already. Also because it is soooo simple to make. But yeah, travel has become very expensive, so the next best thing is to find inspiration online and try out new dishes and flavors at home. We wish you a lot of fun making this desert!
