What is Burrata Cheese?

Before we dive into the recipe, let’s take a moment to appreciate the star of our dish: burrata cheese. Burrata is a decadent Italian cheese that’s a close relative of mozzarella, but with a delightful twist.

The outer layer is made of fresh mozzarella, while the interior is filled with a mixture of cream and stracciatella, giving it an irresistibly creamy and luscious texture. When you slice into burrata, it reveals its rich center, creating a luxurious contrast of textures that adds depth to any dish it graces.

Its origins date back to the early 20th century in the Apulia region of southern Italy. Created as a way to utilize leftover curds, burrata was ingeniously crafted by encasing scraps of mozzarella in a delicate pouch of stretched curd, creating a velvety interior.

Over time, this innovative cheese-making technique evolved into a symbol of culinary craftsmanship, delighting palates worldwide with its rich, buttery texture and ability to effortlessly elevate a variety of dishes. Its subtle flavor makes for a great pairing with so many other ingredients.

How to Make the Burrata Toast?

  1. Caramelize the Peaches: Begin by slicing two ripe peaches. In a pan over medium heat, add a tablespoon of olive oil or butter. Once heated, gently place the peach slices in the pan. Let them sizzle until they achieve a gorgeous caramelized color on both sides. This step intensifies the peaches’ natural sweetness and adds a touch of smokiness.
  2. Toast the Bread: While the peaches are caramelizing, toast four slices of rustic bread to golden perfection. The toasty base adds a delightful crunch to the dish, creating a satisfying contrast with the creamy burrata and tender peaches.
  3. Assemble the Toast: Drizzle a bit of olive oil over the toasted bread slices. Or use olive oil for the toasting process in a pan. Next, layer the rocket salad (arugula) on top. The peppery notes of arugula provide a refreshing contrast to the sweetness of the peaches and the richness of the burrata.
  4. Add the Burrata: Gently tear apart a ball of burrata cheese and distribute the creamy goodness over the rocket salad. The burrata’s silky texture brings an indulgent touch to the toast, enveloping the other ingredients in its luxurious embrace. Depending on the size of your ball of burrata, you might need a second one. (we used two balls for a total of 4 slices of bread)
  5. Crown with Caramelized Peaches: Now, it’s time to place the stars of the show – the caramelized peach slices – on top of the burrata. The velvety peaches mingle with the creamy cheese and the fresh arugula, creating a medley of flavors that dance on your palate.
  6. Season and Drizzle: To enhance the flavors, sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper over the toast. The salt highlights the sweetness of the peaches and balances the richness of the burrata, while the pepper adds a subtle kick. Finally, indulge your masterpiece with a drizzle of balsamic creme, adding a touch of acidity that ties all the elements together.

The Burrata & Caramelized Peach Toast celebrates contrasts and complements. The creaminess of burrata meets the sweetness of caramelized peaches, and the peppery arugula provides a lively counterpoint. This dish is a testament to the magic that happens when carefully chosen ingredients come together with creativity and care. So, whether you’re hosting a brunch, treating yourself to a solo meal, or impressing your guests, remember this recipe and savor the symphony of flavors that only burrata and caramelized peaches can provide. Your taste buds will thank you!
