How to Spend One Day in our Favorite City in Tuscany: Lucca Italy

Nestled within the picturesque landscapes of Tuscany lies the enchanting town of Lucca Italy, a hidden gem waiting to be explored. With just one day to soak in its beauty, here’s a curated guide to making the most of your time in this charming Italian town, including some favorite activities and an unforgettable dinner recommendation at Osteria Candalla.

Why do we love Lucca so much? Well it simply has it all. All that you want from a Tuscan city. From narrow streets to gorgeous cathedrals. What we love most about Lucca Italy is that most tourist flock to the other Tuscan cities such as Florence and Siena. Which are beautiful and special as well, but having less crowds gives Lucca such a bonus charm.

In this post we will take you along on a perfect day in Lucca Italy. Join us!

Morning in Lucca Italy: Embrace the City Walls

Begin your day by strolling along Lucca’s iconic city walls, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into its historic charm. Rent a bike or take a leisurely walk along the elevated promenade, encircling the entire town. Marvel at the scenic vistas of the red-tiled rooftops, charming gardens, and the serene countryside beyond. Oh, and if you want to start with a cup of Italian coffee… go ahead.

Mid-Morning: Visit Historic Landmarks

Explore Lucca’s rich history by visiting its historic landmarks within the walls. Delve into the architectural wonders of Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, a circular square built on the remains of an ancient Roman amphitheater. Take a moment to admire the intricate facade of the Duomo di San Martino, a magnificent cathedral adorned with ornate details. And of course don’t forget to go inside and marvel at all the beauty and historic artifacts.

We also loved visiting the church of San Michele in Foro. It has a completely different vibe on the inside. More exposed brick and less gold and decorations. So we can recommend checking it out and comparing it with the Duomo.

Climb the Guinigi Tower: A Tower of Nature and Panoramic Views

One of Lucca’s most iconic landmarks, the Guinigi Tower, stands tall as a testament to the city’s rich history. Standing at 45 meters (148 feet) high, what makes this tower truly unique is its rooftop garden crowned by ancient holm oak trees — a rare sight among medieval towers.

Embark on a journey up the 230-step spiral staircase to reach the top of the Guinigi Tower. As you ascend, the enchanting fusion of history and nature unfolds before your eyes. The climb is not just an exploration of architectural heritage but also a harmonious encounter with greenery amidst the ancient stones.

From the tower’s terrace, embrace sweeping vistas of Lucca and its picturesque surroundings. The panoramic views offer an exceptional perspective, allowing visitors to marvel at the red-tiled roofs, historical landmarks, and the lush Tuscan countryside that stretches beyond the city walls.

Lunch in Lucca Italy: Taste Local Delicacies

Savor the flavors of Tuscany by indulging in a delightful lunch at one of Lucca’s trattorias or local eateries. Treat yourself to authentic Italian dishes like hearty pastas, freshly baked bread, and locally produced cheeses while enjoying the relaxed ambiance of the town.

Afternoon in Lucca: Wander Through Charming Streets

Spend your afternoon wandering through the picturesque streets of Lucca. Explore the labyrinthine alleys, soak in the ambiance of quaint squares, and discover hidden churches and artisan shops. Don’t miss the opportunity to capture the essence of Lucca’s local life and its timeless beauty.

We love wandering through Lucca. So many cute shops and art galleries to walk into. And of course, enjoy a nice drink on a terrace and watch the people walking by.

Late Afternoon: Relax in Gardens and Green Spaces of Lucca Italy

Find tranquility in Lucca’s verdant green spaces. Head to the stunning Giardini di Palazzo Pfanner or relax in the sprawling Orto Botanico, a botanical garden dating back to the 16th century. Breathe in the fragrant blooms and enjoy a serene moment amidst nature’s splendor.

Evening: Unforgettable Dinner at Osteria Candalla

For an unforgettable dining experience, venture outside Lucca to Osteria Candalla, nestled 30 minutes away in the mountains. This charming osteria offers not just a meal but an immersive journey into Tuscan cuisine and hospitality. Indulge in a delicious dinner featuring local specialties in a unique location surrounded by nature. Relish the authentic flavors and cozy atmosphere for an evening to remember.

Start your dinner by visiting the bar down at the creek. They serve amazing cocktails that get you ever more in the mood for the amazing food to follow. The restaurant itself is devided into small sections on different levels, creating a very intimate feeling. The attention to detail delivers the finishing touch.

And guess what? The prices are very budget friendly.
What we loved most is that tourists don’t know about this hidde gem. So you will feel like a local as you taste their amazing dishes. We will be back for sure, next time we visit Tuscany.
