Ah, the delightful world of macarons! Paris, with its many patisseries and bakeries, holds a special place in its heart for these delicious, colorful confections. Among the iconic names in this sweet realm stands Ladurée Bakery, a celebrated destination known for its macarons. But the question lingers: Are their macarons truly the finest in Paris France?

We have been to Paris many times, since it is only a 5,5 hour drive from our home in the Netherlands. And so we have tasted many (I really mean many) macarons during our visits. On our last visit we really compared the various options and want to share our findings in this blog post.

A Glimpse into Macaron History

Before we delve into the tantalizing flavors of Ladurée, let’s savor a bit of history. The macaron, not to be confused with the dense coconut-based macaroon, originated in Italy and was introduced to France in the 16th century. It wasn’t until the 20th century that the macaron evolved into its delicate, sandwich-like form, consisting of two almond meringue shells with a delicious filling.

The Macaron Maestros Beyond Ladurée

While Ladurée holds a prestigious place in the world of macarons, Paris offers many skilled artisans crafting these delightful treats. We wanted to feature two of our favorites besides Ladurée.

First up: Jean-Paul Hévin, acclaimed for his chocolate mastery, also weaves magic into his macarons. His creations entice with inventive flavors and a perfect balance of textures, offering a delightful deviation from the traditional. Jean-Paul Hévin has multiple stores in Paris, click on this link to find one.

Our second tip: Christophe Roussel, another luminary in the pastry world, tempts taste buds with his innovative macaron varieties. His imaginative approach to flavors and presentation elevates the macaron experience to new heights, inviting patrons on a flavorful adventure. Our favorite flavour is the lavender macaron. So special! Here is the link to the store in Montmartre Paris.

Palette of Flavors at Ladurée

Stepping into Ladurée’s world means immersing oneself in a kaleidoscope of flavors. From classic varieties like vanilla, chocolate, and raspberry to more unconventional delights such as rose petal, salted caramel, and Marie Antoinette (a blend of black tea and citrus), Ladurée offers an extensive array that caters to diverse palates.

Each macaron at Ladurée is meticulously crafted, boasting a delicate shell with a perfect crunch that gives way to a luscious filling, creating a symphony of flavors and textures in every bite.

When you walk into one of the many Ladurée shops in Paris you can feel the luxury. We can tell you it will be hard to pick a favorite flavor. We loved trying the Licorice Macaron. Such a special and delicate flavor, but of course you have to like licorice to begin with.

Macarons at Ladurée (or any other shop) are not cheap. You will pay between €3 and €4 per piece. So pick wisely.
