In this guide, we’ll show you how to experience the iconic leaning tower without spending more than 30 minutes in this bustling Italian town. Because let’s face it, there are other cities in Tuscany just waiting for you to explore, and they don’t come with a leaning tower of selfie sticks.
Don’t get us wrong. We loved visiting Pisa to see the iconic leaning tower of Pisa. But because so many (and we mean many, many, many) other tourists flock to this city every day, for us this was just a short visit to see the highlights.
Pisa is more than just the square with the leaning tower and cathedral, but for us a quick stop during our day of exploring the north of Tuscany was enough. We suggest you do the same. In and out, take your pictures and move on to the next city with much less crowds. Our suggestion: spend an amazing day in Lucca which is only half an hour away from Pisa.
Here is our guide on how to visit Pisa in 30 minutes so you can spend the rest of the day seeing so many other beautiful things in the region.

History of the Leaning Tower of Pisa
The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, situated in the enchanting Italian city of Pisa, is a marvel of architectural ingenuity and historical significance. Construction of the tower began in the 12th century and spanned over 199 years, finally reaching completion in 1372.
Designed as the freestanding bell tower for Pisa’s cathedral, the tower’s unique tilt was a result of unstable foundation soil. The Leaning Tower of Pisa stands at about 56 meters tall and is adorned with eight stories of stunning white marble columns and arches. Despite its unintentional lean, the tower has become a symbol of Italy’s rich cultural heritage and draws millions of visitors annually.
Over the years, there have been multiple restoration efforts to prevent the tower from leaning further and to ensure its structural stability. The most notable intervention took place in the 1990s.
The tower is not just known for its lean but also for its exquisite architectural features. It has eight stories, each adorned with columns, arches, and decorative elements, showcasing Romanesque and Gothic influences.
Climbing to the top offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Piazza dei Miracoli and the picturesque cityscape, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a blend of history, architecture, and unparalleled charm.

How to get the highlight of Pisa in 30 minutes!
- Parking your car: If you come by car, park your car just outside the city walls. Don’t drive in through the various gates, because you will get a fine if you don’t have to correct papers to enter the historic center of the town. (believe us, we found our the hard way…)
- Skip the souvenir shops: Before entering the main square with all the beautiful buildings you will pass by many (many!) souvenir shops. Don’t get distracted from your goal to keep the visit under 30 minutes. Walk by the stalls. You can always quickly buy something on your way back to the car.
- Come early: 10 AM is the magical moment when all of a sudden all the hoards of tourists pop up out of nowhere. So if you want to see the tower with as few other people as possible, come before 10 AM.
- Quick Clicks: Timing is everything. You’ve got precisely 30 seconds to snap that perfect pic before the next wave of aspiring acrobats invades your frame. Take a deep breath, channel your inner influencer, and click away. You may end up with a photo bomb or two, but consider it a souvenir from your time in the Tower Photo Olympics.
- Finding the best photo-spot: Most people try to get the perfect leaning-pictures in the main area of the square. You will literally see hundreds of people posing at the same time. Want to be clever? Walk on to the back side of the tower to a spot where a lot less tourists take their pictures. This will give you less stress and makes for a pictures just as nice. Of course it won’t be free of tourists, but it will be less crowded for sure.
- Skipping the Climb: Tempted to ascend the tower for a panoramic view of Pisa? Think again! Climbing means investing precious minutes and enduring staircases that challenge your fitness level. Besides, who needs the view from the top when you’ve already perfected your leaning pose at ground level?
- Grab a Gelato on the Go: As you exit the tower area, pick up a quick gelato from one of the local vendors. Pisa’s claim to fame may be the tower, but Italian ice cream is where the real magic happens. Enjoy a bite on the move – you’ve got places to be, and Florence isn’t going to explore itself.
