How to get your hands on a Croissant by Cédric Grolet?

It was a sunny Wednesday morning in the middle of May in Paris. I left the apartment we rented for the week and was on my way to Cédric Grolet Opera, the one shop that sells the iconic croissants. It was a 20 minute walk and I was very excited.

I had seen this croissant online many times during my planning for our trip to Paris. And I have to say, in pictures it looked like the most beautiful croissant I had ever seen in my life. I looked so special. With every step I came closer to the store I got more excited to see if the real deal could live up to the online hype.

I had planned to arrive 10 minutes before opening time. But there was already a large queue of people. Should I have gone earlier? I don’t know. That would have meant waiting longer before the shop opened, so that didn’t make that much sense. I had a great talk with some other travelers waiting in line, so that made the waiting not that bad at all.

At exactly 9.30 AM a doorman, all dressed in black, opened the shop and greeted everyone with an enthousiastic “Bonjour! Good Morning! Welcome at Cédric Grolet Opera” and the welcome speech went on for a bit, hyping up all the people in line. This was definitely a fun way to start the day.

In total I waiting for about an hour before I was let into the bakery. The whole process was very smooth and well thought out. I ordered four croissants and decided not to buy any other pastries, since everything was rather expensive. My four croissants were beautifully wrapped and put into a super fancy box (see pics below) so I could carry them back to our apartment.

Let me tell you, walking the streets of Paris with that luxurious box filled with croissants made me feel like the king of the world. (I know… I’m just like a child when it comes to these things)
Let me also tell you that in real life the croissant by Cédric Grolet Opera looked just as amazing as it did online. So I was very happy and excited to be tasting it.

Before I get into the tasting part… and before I share the final verdict on whether or not this croissant is worth waiting in line for, let’s get some stuff sorted. Keep on reading.

A Bite of History: Croissants in Paris

The croissant, a delicate pastry characterized by its buttery layers and irresistible flakiness, has long held a special place in the hearts of Parisians and visitors. Originating from Austria’s famous “kipferl,” this crescent-shaped delight became synonymous with French breakfasts and charming cafes. Over the years, Parisians have elevated the croissant to an art form, and Cédric Grolet’s take on this classic treat is nothing short of a masterpiece.

Cédric Grolet: A Maestro of Pastries

Cedric Grolet, a visionary pastry chef whose name is synonymous with innovation, creativity, and exceptional taste, has emerged as a prominent figure in the culinary world. Trained at prestigious establishments like Le Meurice, his passion for perfection and a deep understanding of flavors have set him apart. His croissants, an ode to tradition and a celebration of craftsmanship, reflect his dedication to pushing boundaries while respecting the roots of French baking.

How is the Croissant Made?

Cédric Grolet’s croissants aren’t just pastries; they are exquisite works of art. Each croissant is a harmonious blend of crisp layers, buttery richness, and an unparalleled lightness that elevates the entire tasting experience. But what sets these croissants apart is the meticulous attention to detail that goes into their creation.

Quality Ingredients: The journey to crafting the perfect croissant starts with the selection of premium ingredients. Grolet emphasizes the use of high-quality butter, flour, and yeast to create the optimal foundation for his delicate pastries.

Technique: The croissant-making process involves careful folding and layering of dough and butter to create those signature flaky layers. Grolet’s mastery lies in his technique, ensuring that each layer is perfectly thin and even.

Rest and Patience: After the initial process, the dough is given ample time to rest and rise, allowing the flavors to develop and the texture to achieve that sought-after lightness.

Baking Mastery: The final step is baking – a delicate balance of time and temperature that transforms the dough into a golden-brown masterpiece. The aroma that fills the bakery as these croissants emerge from the oven is nothing short of enchanting.

Indulge and Immerse: The Croissant Experience

When you sink your teeth into Cédric Grolet’s croissant, you’re not just enjoying a pastry; you’re savoring the culmination of years of expertise, a deep love for baking, and an artist’s dedication to perfection. As the buttery layers melt on your palate and the delicate crunch fills your senses, you’ll understand why these croissants have garnered a reputation and became such a hype.

Holding the croissant in your hands you could already feel the quality. It felt thick and wasn’t that easy to squeeze like most other croissants. Pulling it apart and hearing all of those crunchy flakes being torn was such an experience unlike any other croissant I had before that.

What about the flavors? Well I can tell you it was absolutely great! Perfect croissant flavors that you are hoping for. Nothing mind-blowingly exceptional, but definitely great in what you want from a croissant.
But was it the best croissant?

Is the Croissant by Cedric Grolet the Best in Paris?

Up to that moment, the croissant by Cédric Grolet was by far the best croissant in Paris that we tasted. The flakiness was amazing, so much crunch. But our quest was not over yet. We still had two more bakeries to visit. And we have to be honest, flavor wise the Croissant by Cédric ended up on the second place of our list.

The croissant by La Maison d’Isabelle blew us away the most. It might not be as beautiful to look at as the one by Cédric, but flakiness and flavors were amazing! Boulangerie Liberté comes in third with a great croissant as well. Let’s compare our scores:

Cédric Grolet

  • Our # 2
  • Price: € 4,-
  • By far the most beautiful
  • Very thick and flaky
  • Good (not great) flavor

La Maison d’Isabelle

  • Our # 1
  • Price: € 1,20
  • Great flakiness
  • Amazing flavor
  • Flavor & Flake experience

Boulangerie Liberté

  • Our # 3

  • Amazing flavor

Our final thoughts

Cédric Grolet’s croissant is absolutely amazing. The beauty is stunning and that is what makes it so much fun to eat. The shop is gorgeous and the packaging makes you feel as if you just bought a very expensive piece of jewelry. However, waiting in line for an hour to buy a croissant is a bit silly in our opinion. We had enough time, so for this once it was fine.

But if you only have a few days in Paris, we would recommend getting the amazing croissant at La Maison d’Isabelle and you will be treated to something special as well. The won the prize for best croissant in 2018. There might even be a short line there too, but that will only take you about 5 minutes. And the price of the croissant is one of the cheapest we encountered. So enough reason to skip Cédric and go find yourself a great alternative.

So, if you find yourself in the City of Light, don’t miss the chance to indulge in a croissant. It definitely has captured the essence of Parisian pastry-making. You will love it.

  1. Hello, I found your page while searching for the recipe for the croissants at Le Meurice hotel in Paris. My husband and I recently stayed there, and the croissants were outstanding. So today I was on the hunt to find a recipe. Chef Grolet was listed online as the pastry chef at that hotel. So these croissants are also available at Le Meurice for breakfast. They will cost a pretty penny, however. He also makes amazing desserts that look like a fruit, but are made of a white chocolate shell, and airbrushed, then filled with a fruit filling made from that fruit. Those were amazing as well.

    1. His work is absolutely gorgoeus! A bit expensive, but really spectacular.
He also opened up a cafe where he sells beignets. Those are on our list for next time we visit Paris.
We hope you had an amazing stay.
