Italy, known for its culinary excellence, takes the simple pleasure of ice cream to extraordinary heights with its beloved gelato. In Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, gelato becomes an art form. Join us on a delightful journey through the city’s alleys and piazzas as we explore the best Ice Cream in Florence. We will point you towards the best gelato shops, each promising a taste of pure indulgence.

During our most recent trip to Italy we stayed in the beautiful town of Florence for 3 nights. We had such a great time exploring this stunning city. It is like walking into a book filled with art & history. So much opulence and beauty. Roman statues everywhere.

But what was everywhere as well was the delicious Ice Cream in Florence. I think we could go as far as to say that, after Rome, this is the Gelato capital of the world. So many Gelateria’s with amazing flavors and high quality ice cream. So what did we do? We went on a quest to find the absolute best Ice Cream in Florence. We will give you our top 5 in this article.

But first let’s dive into a few need-to-know facts about Gelato in Italy.

General Tips for Gelato Lovers

1. Authenticity in Metal:
Seek gelaterias that store their gelato in metal containers rather than showcasing it for you to see. Authentic gelato is meticulously preserved in stainless steel, ensuring the ideal temperature and preventing unwanted flavors. The containers showing heaps of Ice Cream may look amazing, but Gelato needs a bit more attention that regular ice cream. So it can’t be properly stored that way.

2. Artiginale, the Sign of Craftsmanship:
Look for the term “artiginale” in the gelateria’s name – a mark of true craftsmanship. Artisanal gelato signifies a commitment to using high-quality, natural ingredients and traditional production methods.

3. Temperature Matters:
Gelato is best enjoyed at a slightly higher temperature than traditional ice cream. The warmer serving temperature intensifies the flavors and allows the gelato to melt in your mouth, creating a smoother texture.

4. Go for Freshness:
Choose gelaterias where flavors are often changed to reflect seasonal ingredients. This ensures you are experiencing the freshest and most vibrant gelato available.

What Sets Gelato Apart:
Gelato, compared to regular ice cream, is distinct in its composition. It has a lower fat content as it uses more milk than cream, resulting in a denser and smoother texture. Additionally, gelato is churned at a slower speed, introducing less air into the mix, creating a richer, more intense flavor experience.

Now, let’s embark on a gelato tour of Florence, featuring some of the city’s most esteemed gelaterias.

1. La Strega Nocciola – Our Favorite Ice Cream in Florence

Translated as “The Hazelnut Witch,” La Strega Nocciola in the San Niccolò neighborhood enchants gelato enthusiasts with its focus on quality and tradition. Indulge in their creamy hazelnut gelato, a timeless Tuscan favorite.

This was our absolute first place winner. The gelato was so creamy and rich and their choice of flavors ranged from classics to adventurous. We loved it. We can highly recommend you trying the “Buontalenti” flavor. It is creamy, milky and has sugar and eggs in it. The richness will blow you away. Another of our favorites was the Bergamot sorbet. Enjoy!

2. La Gelatiera – Our #2 Ice Cream in Florence

Tucked away near the Mercato Centrale, La Gelatiera is a haven for gelato purists. This gelateria prides itself on using top-notch ingredients, resulting in a menu of authentic and irresistible flavors. The rich chocolate and fragrant fruit sorbets are particularly noteworthy.

The sorbet gelato at this shop really blew us away. By far the best sorbet ice cream that we ever tasted. So smooth! But a flavor we can highly recommend is the “hojicha” flavor. The right roasted matcha vibe is amazing. It is their most adventures flavor, but I myself would go back for it without a doubt. This is why we made this our second place in the top 5.

3. Gelateria della Passera – Our #3 Ice Cream in Florence

Nestled in the Oltrarno district, Gelateria della Passera charms locals and visitors alike. Here, you’ll find gelato made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Don’t miss their signature flavor, “Passera,” a delectable blend of chocolate, hazelnut, and orange zest.

This gelateria was right outside of our doorstep. So we went multiple times. And it never disappointed. Very fresh, creamy and full of flavor. A well deserved third spot. Our favorite: their “zabaione” (whipped white wine and cream) flavor!

4. Cantina del Gelato – Our #4 Gelato in Florence

Located along the river not that far from our first place winner, Cantina del Gelato offers a rich tapestry of gelato flavors that cannot be missed. Especially when you come down from enjoying the sunset from Piazza de Michaelangelo. We absolutely loved their salted caramel flavor. But they also serve the stunning Buontalenti.
