We put Lucca on the first spot, since it is our absolute favorite city in Tuscany. Why? It has a unique vibe, beautiful and iconic architecture and it is not overly crowded.

History:
Lucca, enclosed by Renaissance walls, boasts a history dating back to Etruscan and Roman times. Its well-preserved medieval architecture tells tales of a city that flourished during the Middle Ages.

Best Things to Do:
Stroll along the charming city walls, visit the intricate Cathedral of San Martino, and explore the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. Don’t miss the Guinigi Tower for panoramic views. This tower is what makes Lucca so iconic.

Local Food Tip:
Indulge in a plate of Buccellato, a sweet bread with anise seeds, a local delicacy perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth.

How to Get There:
Lucca is easily accessible by train from Florence, Pisa, and other major cities. The Lucca train station is a short walk from the city center. By car it is even easier. Many mayor Tuscan cities are only a 30 or 60 minute apart from eachother. Parking is easy right outside the city walls.

2. Marvel at the beauty of Siena

On number 2 in our list we advice you to visit Siena. We would call this the smaller sister of Florence. It has so much beauty and opulence, but it is easier to see it all in one day and not having to hurry.

History:
Siena, known for its medieval streets and the stunning Piazza del Campo, was a powerful city-state during the Middle Ages. The iconic Cathedral of Siena stands as a testament to its historical prominence.

How to Get There:
Siena is well-connected by bus and train. If arriving from Florence, a bus journey offers picturesque views of the Tuscan countryside. Coming by car? There are parking lots and garages all over the city.

3. Best Cities in Tuscany: the Uniqueness of Volterra

We have to admit that between 3rd en 4th place is not really a difference. Both Volterra and San Gimignano are equally amazing and both deserve the 3rd place. But since we had to choose we decided to put Volterra first. Mainly since this town had the most untouched medieval feel to it. You will feel it when you walk the streets yourself.

History:
Volterra, perched atop a hill, has roots in the Etruscan civilization. Its historical significance is echoed through Roman ruins and medieval architecture.

Best Things to Do:
Explore the well-preserved Roman Theater, visit the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum, and wander through the Piazza dei Priori, the town’s central square. Marvel at the Alabaster workshops showcasing local craftsmanship. Don’t forget to climb up the Casa Torre Toscano for a stunning view over the city and the Tuscan landscape.

Local Food Tip:
Savor the local delicacy, Mazzafegati, a type of sausage made with pig’s liver, a unique flavor that captures the essence of Volterra.

How to Get There:
Volterra can be reached by car or bus. The town’s elevated position provides stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

4. Towers and Views – San Gimignano

Like we said, San Gimignano deserves a 3rd spot along with Volterra. This town sets itself apart from other Tuscan cities because of the many towers. Situated on a hill you will have amazing views all around.

History:
San Gimignano is renowned for its medieval towers, which once symbolized the city’s wealth and power. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Best Things to Do:
Climb the Torre Grossa for panoramic views, stroll through the Piazza della Cisterna, and admire frescoes at the Collegiate Church of San Gimignano. Enjoy a gelato in the shadow of the iconic towers.

Local Food Tip:
Treat yourself to Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a crisp white wine produced locally, paired with some Pecorino cheese for a delightful culinary experience. But you definitely also have to try the adventures flavors of Gelateria Dondoli, they won the award for best ice cream in the world! We loved the Basil Cheesecake flavor and the Thai Mango.

How to Get There:
San Gimignano is accessible by bus from Florence and Siena. Driving through the scenic countryside is also a popular option.

5. Walk into the History Book that is Florence

We put Florence on the 5th spot and here is why: Florence is stunning but also extremely crowded. That took away a little of the charm. But of course it is such a stunning and iconic city and we loved exploring all of it. But if we have to choose we prefer the smaller cities just a tiny bit more. But don’t get us wrong… Florence is spectaculair and can’t be missed.

History:
As the capital of Tuscany, Florence is a treasure trove of Renaissance art and architecture. The Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, and Ponte Vecchio are iconic landmarks that define its rich history.

Best Things to Do:
Visit the Uffizi Gallery, marvel at Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery, and explore the Florence Cathedral. Cross the Ponte Vecchio for a romantic stroll along the Arno River. And marvel at the statues at Piazza della Signorita.

Local Food Tip:
Taste the famous Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a succulent T-bone steak grilled to perfection, reflecting the region’s commitment to culinary excellence. If you are a bit more adventurous then try a Lampredotto sandwich. Lampredotto is a tripe sandwich, simmered in a flavorful broth of tomatoes and aromatic herbs. Served in a crusty roll, it is often enjoyed with a drizzle of green sauce or spicy red pepper oil, offering a unique and savory taste of Tuscany.
